Obituary

Ms. Doris Marie Nazareth, affectionately known as “Dot”, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend transitioned peacefully from this life on April 13th 2026, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and unforgettable memories.  She was born September 16, 1937, in Warwick County, Virginia, to the late Alexander Spencer and Louise Nazareth Smith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by daughter Chauncey Nazareth, great granddaughter Keona Swittenberg; brothers, Rev. Elmer Lee Nazareth, William (Billy) Nazareth, James (Jimmy) Smith; sisters Joan Smith, Carolyn Campbell.

Dot attended George Washington Carver High School in Newport News.  She would later work as a civil service employee for many years, retiring from the Army Air Force Exchange in 1987.

She had a spirit that drew people in and a personality that kept them there.  Known for her quick wit and sharp sense of humor, she had a way of turning even ordinary moments into something memorable.

She found joy in the simple things that made life rich. She loved spending time with family, watching sports, playing cards, and fishing.

More than anything, Dot cherished her family and the time spent together.  If someone was in need, Dot’s home was always open.  Her presence filled rooms, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved her.

She leaves to cherish her memory; daughters Sheila Nazareth of Hampton, Cheryl Curry of Temple Hills, MD and Sharon Alston (Lucius) of Hampton; eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; sisters; Mable Drew, and Helen Bland, both of Newport News; brothers; Raymond Smith of Colorado, and Randolph Nazareth (Christine) of North Carolina; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Dot always said “It was better to laugh, than to cry.” We ask that you not cry, but remember her for her laughter, humor, generosity, the joy she created, the way she brought people together and made everyone feel at home.
