Obituary

Donnell Gilmore, 66, of Carrollton, Virginia, closed his eyes and found peace on July 29th, 2025.

Born and raised in Wake Forest, North Carolina, Donnell was a kindhearted, thoughtful child with a curious mind, a quiet strength, and a natural gift for numbers. Even at a young age, his intelligence and calm presence stood out. He was also a gifted athlete who ran track and played football and basketball—competing with drive, discipline, and grace.

Donnell graduated from Wake Forest-Rolesville High School, where he began laying the foundation for a life marked by character, commitment, and quiet confidence.

As he grew older, Donnell's path eventually led him to the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, where he built a life filled with love, meaning, and strong relationships.

Donnell was known for his unwavering loyalty and deep love for his family. He was a man of few words but lasting impact—a steady and faithful presence who believed in showing up for the people he loved, always without seeking attention or recognition.

One of Donnell's lifelong passions was cheering for the Dallas Cowboys. Whether they were winning or rebuilding, he stayed loyal—always repping the "star" and proudly reminding everyone where his allegiance stood.

He enjoyed the simple things: old-school music, cars, good food, a good joke told just right, and the joy of Christmas lights. Every Christmas season, he looked forward to taking his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and godchildren to see the houses lit up—smiling as their eyes sparkled with wonder. Though wise beyond his years, Donnell remained forever young at heart. He watched cartoons like Dragon Ball Z and Teen Titans Go! with genuine enthusiasm, and his laughter—especially when a comedy got him going—was deep, joyful, and unforgettable. If you were lucky enough to hear that heartfelt baritone laugh, you'd carry it with you always.

Donnell often said he met his wife while shopping for a lamp—with a smile that left you wondering if that was the whole story or just his charming version of it. But what truly mattered was everything that came after: a deep, lasting partnership built on loyalty, laughter, and love.

He loved his wife with quiet sincerity and unwavering steadiness—and in her, he found home, his real love, and a true-life partner. Together, they found joy in welcoming family and friends, especially during backyard cookouts, joyful birthday parties, creative anniversary celebrations, and meaningful holiday gatherings. These moments weren't just events—they were reflections of who they were: warm, generous, full of life, and centered on love and connection.

Donnell lived with grace, faith, and gratitude—and left behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sandra Gilmore; his children, Donicia Gilmore of Wilmington, NC and Donnell T. Hunt of Carrollton, VA; and his birth mother, Margaret N. Smith of Gainesville, FL. He is also survived by his siblings: James (Arlene) Estes of

Franklinton, NC; Peggy Gilmore, Margaret A. (Todd) Plummer, Della May Smith, all of Raleigh, NC; Claude E. Smith, of New York, NY; and Margaret (Alvin) Williams of High Springs, FL; as well as his father-in-law, Lonnie Carney Sr.; brother-in-law, Lonnie Carney Jr.; and sister- and brother-in-law, Annette and James Davis all of Newport News, VA.

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren—Xzavyer Donnell Gilmore, Warryn Lytel Davis, Terynce Sincere Davis, Kellani Sheryll Evans, Adrianne Elizabeth Hunt, Alicia Nevaeh Hunt, and Grayson Blake Strouth—as well as many dearly loved nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness and presence.

Donnell was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonsa and Virginia Gilmore; his birth father, Raymond Hodge; his mother-in-law, Jereline Carney; and his siblings, Joseph Smith, Doris Ann Smith, and Roger Smith.

His life will be remembered and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know him
