Obituary

Deacon Everette Alexander Hicks, Sr. affectionately known as "Teddy," was born on September 16, 1934 in Surry, VA to the late Thomas Hicks and Alice Broadus.  He answered the Master's Call at his home on May 31, 2025.

Teddy was a dedicated and loving husband for 42 years to his late wife, Lucille Whitaker Hicks, and from this union one son was born.  He was an active member of Ivy Baptist Church in Newport News, VA; in which he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Trustee, Christian Board of Education and Cancer Ministry.

Teddy graduated from George Washington Carver High School and upon graduating, he served in the United States Army in both the US and Korea.  After honorably discharging from the Army, he pursued his academic passions by graduation from Norfolk division of Virginia State College (now Norfolk State University) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961.  He also obtained is Master's of Arts degree from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) thereafter.  This began his lifelong career as an educator with 32 years of service with Newport News Public Schools at Carver High School, Ferguson High School, Point Option and Menchville High School.  He held many roles within the school systems such as teacher, coach and administrator.  After retiring from NNPS in 1991, he returned to serve NNPS by becoming a member of the school board in the year 2000.  He held the title of Vice Chairman from 2006-2008, then Chairman from 2008-2010.  He retired in 2016 after many years of devoted service.

In addition, Teddy was very active in his community.  He was a lifetime member of the Newport News chapter of the NAACP, held membership in the C. Waldo Scott Center trustee board, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Hampton Roads board of directors, and the Virginia Educators Credit Union board of directors.  He thoroughly enjoyed pouring into the youth of Newport News.

Teddy was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings, Nellie Perry, William T. Hicks, Floyd L. Hicks, Ernest Hicks, Louis Hicks and Bernard Pierce.  He is survived by his son, Everette A. "Joe" Hicks, Jr.; Grandchildren: George Hicks (Tomika), Tiffany Ivey (Azeem), Ashlyne Cole (Marvin) and Raven Glasco (Darius); 11 Great-grandchildren; a special niece Anne Henderson; and host of nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the Celebration of Life service starting at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at Ivy Baptist Church.  Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
