David Lee Whitley Jr. (Chicken) passed away at age 78 on December 14, 2023, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia. He was the oldest child of the late David L. Whitley, Sr. and Mildred Riddick Whitley (Bootsie).

David graduated from Huntington High School in 1963 in Newport News, Virginia. After graduating high school, he served in the US Army for 4 years. When he returned home from military service, he met Vivian Lorraine Spruiel, and they were married on April 1, 1967. They had 4 children together, Marchele Glander (Larry), Rosalind Whitley-Martin (Samuel), Wanda Whitley and Derrick Whitley.

David was employed by the VA Hospital where he worked as a nurse until he retired in 1995.

The greatest memory of David was his love and dedication in the caring of his mother ensuring that she had anything that she wanted until the time of her death. The outpouring of love that he showed to his children, family and friends will be missed.

Cherishing his memory are his children, Marchele Glander (Larry), Rosalind Whitley-Martin (Samuel), Wanda Whitley and Derrick Whitley; his siblings Willie Whitley (Mattie), Judith W. Neal (Leonard), Cynthia L. Adams and Pamela D. Dougoud; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and a host of family members and friends.

Viewing will be held Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. A funeral service will be held 12 Noon Friday, December 22, 2023 at St. Augustine Episcopal Church, 2515 Marshall Avenue, Newport News, Va.  Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
