David Gerrel Darnell

David Gerrel Darnell (known by many as "Darnell") was born to the late Elizabeth Powell-Darnell on September 25, 1951.  He transitioned into eternal life on December 28, 2023, at his home in Hampton, Virginia in the presence of his loving wife Patricia Darnell.

Growing up in Lumberton, NC, Gerald attended Lumberton High School, where he excelled in football as a halfback.  Post-graduation in 1970, Gerald and his twin brother Earl pursued education at Robeson Technical Institute, specializing in welding.  After completing their courses, they made a move to Hampton Roads, VA in 1971.  After settling in Virginia, Gerald commenced his career as a Welder at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock company, now recognized as Huntington Ingalls Industries.  Regrettably, in 2014, he had to discontinue his work due to a disability resulting from an accidental fall.

Gerald was an outgoing and family-centric man with a love for bowling, fishing, and playing pool.  During his leisure time, Gerald could always be found engaged in two of his favorite pastimes—fishing and enjoying a game of pool.  These activities not only provided him with relaxation but also served as avenues for socializing and connecting with others who shared similar interests.  His active involvement in these hobbies reflected his love for life and the importance he placed on creating memorable experiences with family and friends.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Patricia Darnell, sons, David "DJ" Darnell and Nicholas Darnell, granddaughters, Davisha Darnell, Arianna Darnell and grandson, Demetrius Grogins, brothers, Gene Powell (Barbara), Ernest Darnell, and Earl Darnell (Nancy) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2024 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  Entombment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
