Curtistene Stephenson
Johnson
d. Apr 1, 2026
Curtistene Stephenson Johnson, affectionately known as “Curti,” peacefully transitioned on April 1, 2026, surrounded by love. She was born on May 26, 1964, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late James Edward Stephenson, Sr. and Joyce Exum Stephenson.
Curti was raised and educated in the Newport News Public School system, where she developed a love for music. She proudly participated in her school band, where she played the French horn, an experience that reflected her quiet strength and dedication. She later graduated from Menchville High School in 1982.
Following her education, Curti dedicated many years of service to Hampton Machine Shop, where she was known for her strong work ethic and reliability. She remained committed to her work until declining health required her to step away.
In 1989, Curti was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, James V. Johnson, Jr. Through this union, she lovingly embraced her role as a bonus mother to his son, Dartanien Spruill. Together, they built a life centered on love and family. Their union was further blessed with two daughters, Eboni Shade’ Johnson and M’Chelle Simone Johnson, whom she cherished deeply.
Curti was a woman of quiet grace, strength, and unwavering devotion. She faithfully served as a church clerk at First United Baptist Church, where her dedication and gentle spirit left a lasting impression. Though she was soft-spoken, her presence was powerful, and her love for her family was evident in all that she did.
She found her greatest joy in her family, especially in her role as a grandmother. Her grandson, Jarion Johnson, was truly her pride and joy, bringing light and happiness into her life. She was also deeply devoted to her mother, Joyce Stephenson, caring for her with love and compassion.
Curtistene was preceded in death by her father, James Edward Stephenson, Sr.; her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Guy; her maternal grandparents, Gus and Viola Exum; and her brother, James E. Stephenson, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her loving husband, James Johnson of Chesapeake Virginia; her devoted mother, Joyce Stephenson of Newport News Virginia; her brother, Perry J. Stephenson, Sr. (Tasha) of Fort Worth, Texas; son Dartanien Spruill; her beloved daughters Eboni Johnson of Hampton Virginia and Michelle Johnson of Newport News Virginia; her grandson Jarion Johnson of Hampton Virginia; granddaughter, Xy’Leena Spruill of Newport News Virginia; two special daughters, Daisha Ortiz and Jasmine Person, both of Newport News, Virginia; along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
A memorial service celebrating Curtistene’s life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Baptist Church,6400 Roanoke Ave, Newport News, 23605, where Rev. William Ruffin presides.
