Charles A.
Moore, Sr.
d. Jul 10, 2023
Charles Augusta Moore, Sr. was born in Enfield, North Carolina on March 24, 1947, to the late Luther Moore, Sr., and Mattie J. Wilkins Moore. He was called home to be with the Lord on July 10, 2023, at the age of 76, after a long illness.
Charles graduated from Huntington High School in 1967. He was a Boy Scout and loved all things outdoors. He began his career at the Newport News Shipyard and later pursued a career at Chesapeake Masonry as a Master Bricklayer. He worked there for over 35 years until his retirement. Charles met the love of his life, Susan Diane Smith, and they married in 1968; from this union three children were born.
Charles was a pillar of his community and recreation league sports in the City of Newport News for more than 40 years. He was tireless in his dedication to the Southeast Community, and he was the epitome of a great coach, mentor, teacher, and surrogate father to youth in the community and within his family. He started coaching baseball at Anderson Park in the 1970's. He went on to coach championship football B-National teams at Doris Miller (formerly World War II) , with several unbeaten seasons. Charles also served as the president and vice president of the Doris Miller Football League Coaches Association. He also later ventured into coaching basketball. He was one of the best teachers in the league for the players and other coaches. If a kid did not have the means to play, he ensured that they were given the opportunity as he often covered the cost. Several of his former players went on to play in college and professional leagues or went on to have careers helping others through the skills gained from Coach Moe. He always taught the youth that he coached as well as his own children to have a spirit of tenacity (treating every obstacle as an opportunity to improve and having determination to achieve your goals) . He was the ultimate father figure to many and loved and admired by all.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, Luther Earl Moore, Sr.; mother, Mattie Jewel Wilkins Moore; and brother, Luther Earl Moore. Jr.
Our beloved Charles leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy, the love of his life for 55 years, Susan Diane Moore; and his children, Shannon Moore Byrd, Ivy Moore, and Charles Moore, Jr. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Takari Moore-Reese, Kennedy Byrd, L'Amor Moore-Batten, Charles Moore, III, Ian Byrd, Aiden Moore, and Allyson Moore. He leaves his beloved sister, Belvin Ann Hill, and brother, Ricky Moore (Janice); his sisters and brothers-in-law Garfield Smith, Jr(Paulette), Jacqueline Y. Jones (Eugene), Brenda J. Wilkes, his sister-in-love and best friend, Ivy Jean Jones (Lance), Timothy Smith (Silvia), Rickey Nelson, Gloria Jean Gregory, Alda Eley, and Sheila Davis; along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Viewing will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, Va. 23607. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at New Hope Baptist Church, 1415 Big Bethel Road, Hampton, Va.
