Obituary

Cary D. Cunningham departed this life for his best life on March 29, 2025.  Cary was born to Geneva Alford Cunningham and Willie C.L. Cunningham, Sr. on June 8, 1948 at Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Cary was educated in the Hampton Public School system, graduating from George P. Phoenix High School in 1966.  After high school, Cary attended Norfolk State University.  Cary was later called to serve in the United States Military.  After Cary's service in the military, Cary completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at Norfolk State University.

Cary began his spiritual journey at Little Zion Baptist Church as a Sunday School participant.  Cary joined First Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend S. Gaines and later rejoined under the leadership of Reverend Richard Wills, where he faithfully attended until his health began to fail.

Cary had numerous jobs during his lifetime, such as; ice cream truck driver, shipyard worker, pizza delivery driver, assistant in summer youth programs at H.I. (now Hampton University) and Langley Air Force Base, substitute teacher, emergency dispatcher.  Cary treasured most of his work with the federal government in the accounting field.

Cary was predeceased in death by parents, Willie Cunningham, Sr. and Geneva Cunningham; sisters, Kathryn Miles-Samm, Brenda C. Mauney (Melville), Barbara Jean Rhone (Charles); brothers, Ronald B. Cunningham, Sr. (Delia), Wade A. Cunningham.

Left to cherish his memories are, his loving wife of 50 years and three months, Roslyn Cunningham; daughter, Felicia Nicole Cunningham Lann Myles (Cornell) of Lawrenceville, GA.; son, Cary Douglas Cunningham, Jr. of Hampton, Va.; granddaughter, Raelyn Kamil Lann of Lawrenceville, GA.; brother, Willie C. L. Cunningham, Jr. of Sugarland, TX; sisters, Janice C. Wilson (Alvin) of Hampton, Va., Pamela C. Sookins (John) of Chesterfield, VA) and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Cary was a quiet, gentle, easy going man, who loved God and family.  As a youngster, Cary was an avid baseball player who others felt had capabilities of being a pro.  Cary delighted in telling jokes, playing cards, tennis and pool.  Cary is now resting in the arms of our dear Savior.

A wake service will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2025 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025 at First Baptist Church - Hampton.  Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
