Obituary

Bishop Nicholas Mennute Anthony, Sr. was born in Castries, St Lucia on 20 December 1945 to the late Mr. Diguel and the late Anthanes Armstrong, where he also received his education in the public school system of the Caribbean Islands.  Upon completing his educational pursuits, Bishop Anthony spent most of his young adult life working as a professionally trained Bosun for hire, as part of a luxury yacht charter crew. As a result of the professional relationships and connections he made as a crew member on boats chartered by Americans, and his love for America ideals, Bishop Anthony moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands and became an American citizen in 1966.  This is where he met his sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Mrs. Lucy Veronica Anthony.

As a husband and dedicated family man, Bishop Anthony leveraged his ability to learn quickly and excelled at whatever job he performed to become the proverbial "jack of all trades" but master of "many."  After his time sailing throughout the Caribbean, Bishop Anthony worked as an oil refinery worker, brick mason, plumber, and carpenter, mechanic, and industrial painter.  He built his first family home in the Clifton Hill area of St. Croix with the help of a few friends. In 1978 he moved to the state of Virginia ahead of his family to prepare for their follow-on arrival a year later.  As an expert industrial painter, he worked for PWC on the Norfolk Naval Base for over 18 years.  He also owned a commercial and residential painting business named "Anthony's Painting."  Bishop Anthony established a legacy of a strong work ethic and dedication to duty which he instilled in his children and family.

Along with his notable working accomplishments, Bishop Anthony would be quick to tell anyone, that in keeping with 2 Corinthians 4:18 which is commonly interpreted as "only what is done for Christ will last," he was more thankful for all that God had afforded him to do in the execution of heavenly focused, soul-saving, kingdom business.  In the early 70s, as a dedicated family man, Bishop Anthony along with his wife, found themselves in desperate need of healing for one of their children.  They decided to attend a series of open-air revivals conducted by the Holy Ghost-filled, powerful Evangelical Preacher, R.W. Schambach.  This is where they accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, their son was healed and they committed themselves to life-long service for God.

When Bishop Anthony gave his life to the Lord, he dedicated all that he did toward helping to share the love of Jesus with those who he came in contact with.  Elevated to Bishop in the early 1990s, Bishop Anthony was widely known as a powerful prayer warrior, loving Pastor, and passionate preacher who encouraged others with words of wisdom by exemplifying a standard of living Holy in accordance with God's word. As a faithful servant within the ranks of the presbytery of the Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) in the state of Virginia, he pastored the congregations of the downtown Newport News Church, Hampton Mission Church, and the Smithfield Church of God of Prophecy.

All the memories Bishop Anthony created will be cherished by his wife Lucy V. Anthony; his sons Joseph (Cassandra), Keith (Peggy), Nicholas Jr. (Carmen), and Abraham (Robin); eight Grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren, two Sisters (Clarita & Clemenceau), Brother-in-Law (Cyril/Daniel); and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family, and friends.

Public viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. followed by A Celebration of Life service starting at 12:00 p.m. Friday, October 6, 2023 at All Nations Church; 853 Cloverleaf Ln. Newport News, VA 23601.  Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
