Obituary

Barbara Manley West, beloved mother, transitioned on December 27, 2023 at the age of 91.  She was born in Newport News, Virginia on July 22, 1932, to the late Zebulon and Vergie Manley.

Barbara was a product of the Newport News Public Schools System and continued her education in the school of life, where she married the love of her life, Bernard L. West, Sr., on March 27, 1948. Their marriage of seventy years ended with his passing on December 22, 2018. Together, they were blessed with five wonderful children. Barbara's devotion to her husband and family was paramount, and she found her greatest joy in being a stay-at-home mom, creating a warm and loving home for her family.

A woman of deep faith, Barbara was an active and devoted member of the First Church of NN Baptist. She served as a Deaconess, Church Mother, Golden Age and Chairperson of the Archive Committee, holding a precious role in preserving the history of the church. Her dedication to her faith and community was evident, and her impact will be a lasting legacy. Barbara was an individual who touched the lives of many, making her home a safe haven for family, friends, and neighbors. Her deep love for the Lord guided her in raising her children to know and reverence Him, instilling in them a respect for their father, the West name, and their household. She is remembered by her loved ones for the warmth and love she exuded in all she did.

Preceding Barbara in death were her infant son, Bernard Zebulon West; her parents, Zebulon and Vergie Manley; her sister, Inell Dillard; and her husband, Bernard L. West, Sr. She is survived by her children, Trudy W. Mason, Tony L. (Sharron) West, Sr., Bernard L. West, Jr., and Angela West (Theodore) Jones, III. She leaves a cherished legacy through her wonderful grandchildren, Tracey B. Mason, Timothy (Carla) Smith, Tony L. (JaMisha) West, Jr., Christopher L. (Patrice) West, Scott M. (Katie) West, Blake A. West, Jasmine S. West, Noah B. West, and Bernard L. West, III, and Madison M. Jones as well as eight amazing great-grandchildren. , Tre' Mason, Charlotte West, Journee West,  Lillian, Lucca and Lola Smith, Khalil and Khamani Estrada .Barbara also leaves behind a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and loving friends,  whose lives she touched. Her memory will continue to be celebrated by those who were fortunate enough to know her, and her impact will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.

Viewing will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.  A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2024 at First Church of Newport News (Baptist).  Entombment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
