Alma Louise Gale Brown was born on August 14, 1948 in Hampton to Purnell Gale. Alma was called home to be with the Lord on May 25, 2023. She was the oldest of three children. She graduated from Collis P. Huntington High School, class of 1966. She attended Norfolk State University were she studied Business. She married James " J.T" Brown in March of 1971 at New Grafton Baptist Church. She began working for the state of Virginia at the Newport News Health Department in 1974 and retired in 2013 having served 39 years.
Gone from our sight and touch but never from our hearts. Alma leaves to cherish her memory, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, James Tyrone "JT" Brown whom she adored, her sister in laws Annie B. Cherry and Caprice Brown.
Surviving her is her mother, Purnell Gale Johnson and her mother in-law, Annie Belle Blizzard Brown. From her marriage, she was blessed with two daughters, Michelle R. Perry (Clarence) and Sherri Thompson (Alston); seven grandchildren, Deshon Brown, Cordell Wheat, II, Mikala Wheat; Stanley Sutherlin, Xavier Sutherlin, Christian Perry and Andre Thompson; sisters, Brenda Reed and Tonya Davis (Calvin); brother in laws, Frederick Brown, Jr. (Shirley) and Shiron Brown (Richetta); brothers in love Marcus Brown and Charles Cherry; sister in laws, Vivan Jackson and Michelle Tucker (Rodney) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loving friends and neighbors.
Alma accepted Christ at an early age, becoming a member at New Grafton Baptist Church in Newport News, VA. Her life of service includes serving in the Adult Choir, and as a Usher at New Grafton Baptist Church. Upon joining Ebenezer Baptist Church in Hampton, VA she and her husband served in the Usher Ministry and were members of the Seniors Ministry. She enjoyed reading, cooking (especially desserts), shopping, having lunch with the "Golden Girls" from the health department, spending time with her husband, her grandchildren, family and friends. She was very proud to be an alumni from Huntington High School.
Alma shall be remembered as a woman who loved God, family and friends dearly. Her grandchildren had a very special place and will surely carry on her rich legacy. She was a special soul that was a giver of herself to make life better for others. Her joyful smile, kind words and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
Viewing will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 12:00 Noon until 5:30 p.m at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601-27th Street, Newport News, VA. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2023 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 171 Semple Farm Road, Hampton, VA. 23666. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
