Obituary

Mr. Adlai Dwight Mason was born on January 18, 1954, in Mullins, SC to the late Deacon Elbert Mason, Jr. and Leatha Mae Mason. Adlai departed this life on Sunday October 27, 2024, at Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehabilitation Warwick Forest. Adlai was educated in Newport News Public Schools and graduated from Warwick High School in 1972.  He was affectionately known as Al.

From an early age, Adlai was an avid car lover, and he loved working on cars and trucks. Later in life, Al worked at his uncles' gas station on 39th Street in Newport News, Mason Brothers Mobil.  This led him to his next job working for Benson and Phillips Cement Truck Company, where he worked for years before the accident that disfigured his left hand. That did not stop Al from working on cars as well as many other household projects. Al had a wonderful smile and anybody that knew him well knew that he loved to play the lottery.

Al married Pearline Nicholson on March 15, 1997, in a ceremony officiated by his late Uncle Rev. Dr. James F. Mason. They were married for 23 years until Pearline's death in September of 2020.

Adlai conquered many medical challenges in his life and loved his family. Al was the type of man that would call you and check on you to see how you were doing despite how he was feeling. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Adlai was preceded in death by his wife, Pearline Mason, his father, Elbert Mason, Jr., his mother, Leatha Mae Mason, and his brothers Dexter Mason, Roderick Mason and Elbert Mason, III.

Adlai leaves to cherish fond memories of his life his daughter, Rena Richardson; his son, AlGreco Woods (Tammie); his siblings: Linda Rice, Eric Mason (Pat), Rickie Mason, and Faith Gilliam (Anton); his grandchildren, Sa'Von Richardson, Sa'Nyah Richardson, Iyanna Richardson and Dynika Woods; his great grandchildren: Jakajah Woods and Ja'kare Jacobs and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Adlai will be missed, but never forgotten by all who loved him.  Rest in eternal paradise until we meet again.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Trinity Baptist Church, 2900 Chestnut Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607.
