Martha Ann Matthews Ayers

Martha Ann Matthews Ayers, beloved wife of Lt. Col Robert D. Ayers Jr. (Retired) for 52 years entered into eternal rest Friday, February 3, 2012. Born October 26, 1937 in Kingstree, SC to the late Margaret Harvin, she was a graduate of South Carolina State University where she received her BS and MS Degrees in Education.

She was a retired educator with over 40 plus years of teaching experience. She taught for 20 plus years with the Newport News Public School System, teaching at the former G.W. Carver Middle School and Menchville High School, where she positively impacted the lives of many students.

She was an active member and has served as President of the National Council of Negro Women, Newport News/Hampton Section, where in 2006 she instituted “The Visionaries” program for mentoring young women in the community. She was also an active Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Hampton Alumnae Chapter. With a passion for civic service to her community, she was deeply involved in and a member of the NAACP, Twentieth Century Women’s Club, South Carolina State University National Alumni Association, Aberdeen Historic and Civic Association, and the Hampton Retired Teachers Association.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2pm at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church, 830 25th Street, Newport News, VA with the Rev. Lawrence Willis officiating.

As her Final Rite of Passage from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., an Omega Omega Service will be held Saturday February 11, 2012 at 6pm at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel 1601 27th St, Newport News, VA followed immediately by Visitation for family and friends from 7 to 8pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Martha Ayers Scholarship Fund of The National Council of Negro Women, Newport News/Hampton Section, P.O. Box 9426, Hampton, VA 23670.
